On August 30, 1978, Levere Montgomery closed The Joy on Canal
Street.  With Universal now having multiple runs of their films, business
dropped drastically.

It was rumored that the building would be converted into some other
use…  even a chicken stand.

Rene Brunet, long time theatre operator, was interested in leasing The
Joy.  A deal was struck and he reopened The Joy on December 20,
1978 with Clint Eastwood’s “Every Which Way But Loose.”
